{"id":344400,"date":"2023-09-13T14:17:22","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T18:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dctheaterarts.org\/?p=344400"},"modified":"2023-09-13T14:17:22","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T18:17:22","slug":"stage-and-tv-star-renee-elise-goldsberry-on-her-upcoming-concert-at-gmu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dctheaterarts.org\/2023\/09\/13\/stage-and-tv-star-renee-elise-goldsberry-on-her-upcoming-concert-at-gmu\/","title":{"rendered":"Stage and TV star Ren\u00e9e Elise Goldsberry on her upcoming concert at GMU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ren\u00e9e Elise Goldsberry, best known for playing Angelica Schuyler in the original Broadway cast of <em>Hamilton \u2014 <\/em>a role that won her a Tony, Emmy, and Grammy \u2014 has amassed a lifetime of successes on stage and screen: from lauded Broadway performances in <em>The Lion King<\/em>, <em>Rent<\/em>, and <em>Hamilton<\/em>, to major roles on popular TV shows including <em>Ally McBeal<\/em>, <em>The Good Wife<\/em>, and most recently, <em>Girls5Eva.<\/em> And anyone who has heard her belting, jazz-inflected voice knows she is a master vocalist.<\/p>\n<p>But more than a singer, TV performer, or theater performer, Goldsberry considers herself a storyteller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call myself a storyteller because that term best encompasses my goals,\u201d Goldsberry shared during a recent phone interview. \u201cThroughout my entire life, my goals have been to tell stories of human beings, Americans, women, and Black women, in whatever I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_344409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-344409\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-344409\" src=\"https:\/\/dctheaterarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Renee-Elise-Goldsberry-photo-by-Justin-Bettman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-344409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rene\u0301e Elise Goldsberry. Photo by Justin Bettman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Goldsberry\u2019s upcoming concert appearance on September 30 as part of George Mason University\u2019s ARTS<em> by George!<\/em> benefit event will reflect the breadth and diversity of her talents. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cfa.calendar.gmu.edu\/ren-233-e-elise-goldsberry-in-concert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concert <\/a>will feature songs by artists as varied as Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan, great jazz and pop vocalists, and the theater tunes that made her a Broadway icon, including songs from <em>Hamilton<\/em>, <em>Rent, <\/em>and <em>The Lion King<\/em>. In a wink and a nod to her standout solo number from <em>Hamilton<\/em>, Goldsberry jokes, \u201cEveryone will leave the show feeling \u2018Satisfied.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goldberry has been touring with her band since 2017, refining and evolving a 90-minute set that she hopes will feel like a huge party for audiences.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best things about the success of <em>Hamilton<\/em>, Goldsberry says, is that it opened up opportunities for her to connect with audiences who shared her love for the show. \u201c<em>Hamilton<\/em> started off as inaccessible to most people [who couldn\u2019t get to NYC or afford tickets]. It\u2019s beautiful that it is everywhere now. Photo by Cameron Bertuzzi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Goldsberry brings her concert to the DC region on the heels of her first return to a New York theater production since <em>Hamilton<\/em>. At the Public Theater last month, she took on the lead role of Prospero in a <a href=\"https:\/\/publictheater.org\/productions\/season\/2223\/fsitp\/tempest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">musical adaptation of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/publictheater.org\/productions\/season\/2223\/fsitp\/tempest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Tempest<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Goldsberry feels a deep connection to the Public Theater, which she credits for first putting her on the radar of a young Lin-Manuel Miranda when she performed in a 2005 production of <em>Two Gentlemen of Verona<\/em>. Returning to the Public Theater for <em>The Tempest<\/em> allowed her to work with the theater\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/publictheater.org\/programs\/publicworks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Works Program,<\/a> which brings together a handful of professional performers to work with NYC residents who often have no theater experience at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result is a thrilling and exhausting community-building adventure,\u201d Goldsberry says. \u201cBy the end of the run, the entire company felt like family.\u201d Most exciting for Goldsberry was the fact that her two children were in the ensemble. \u201cIt was the first time in my life that I didn\u2019t have to choose between the two passions in my life!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GMU\u2019s ARTS <em>by George!<\/em> benefit event isn\u2019t the only charitable work Goldsberry has been championing lately. She credits the <em>Hamilton <\/em>team, and the Miranda family, for modeling the importance of using their visibility to contribute to the world in a positive way. Goldsberry recently visited Puerto Rico in <a href=\"https:\/\/remezcla.com\/art\/lin-manuel-miranda-is-bringing-hamilton-back-to-puerto-rico\/#:~:text=Miranda%20and%20the%20rest%20of,public%20appearance%20together%20since%202017.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a fundraising effort<\/a> with Lin-Manuel Miranda, his father Luis Miranda, and other members of the original <em>Hamilton <\/em>cast, the first such reunion of original cast members since 2017. \u201cBeing a part of the <em>Hamilton <\/em>family and being able to participate in these efforts is a gift,\u201d the actress says.<\/p>\n<p>Goldsberry\u2019s decades-long television career is also keeping her busy. Since 2021, she has starred in <em>Girls5Eva<\/em>, a musical comedy in which Goldsberry plays a member of a one-hit-wonder girl band trying to get its mojo back. Other Broadway luminaries appearing on the show include Sarah Bareilles, Ashley Park, and Andrew Rannells. <em>Girls5Eva <\/em>aired on Peacock for two seasons. The third season, picked up by Netflix, has been filmed and will air when the current Hollywood writers and actors strike concludes.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Goldsberry is having a ball touring the country with her band, a team she has performed with since 2017 at numerous events like the September 30 ARTS <em>by George!<\/em> benefit event.
